National intranet - Definition from the Hotspot Shield Glossary

A national intranet is in essence a substitute for a public internet and is used by governments who want to control media and online communications of its citizens.

The intranet will be an IP based network that is maintained by the government and will have substitutes for the common functionality of the internet such as search engines, email and news outlets. All of these facilities will be monitored by the government, as would access to the outside internet and media.

There are several countries that actively implement a National Intranet, the most famous of which is the Kwangmyong Network of North Korea, Myanmar, Cuba and Iran also operate such intranets. While a national intranet provides the public with everything they need, it does not allow online freedom, and limits them exclusively to what information the government wants to display.
